Sigma Nutrition – Episode 294: Nicola Guess, PhD, RD – Prediabetes & Type 2 Diabetes Nutrition
This week’s podcast is a discussion about prediabetes with @dr__guess on Sigma Nutrition Podcast @dannylennon_sigma.
They introduced a new concept to me, how there are two types of prediabetes: 🔸elevated fasting BG but normal oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). 🔸normal fasting BG but elevated 2 hour OGTT.
A focus of this conversation is the really interesting research on the use of low-carbohydrate diets in the management of type 2 diabetes and fascinatingly, the potential remission of it. For those interested in reading more about this a big trial in this area is called the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT) and the 2 year follow up data has now been published.
This research is transforming the way we think of diabetes, away from a solely progressive disease.
I thought it was particularly valuable how @dr__guess clarifies the distinction between disease remission and reversal and the importance of using these terms correctly.
They talk about why weight loss leads to remission or improvement in biomarkers.
I think it’s a fascinating discussion and really recommend a listen.
